We are partnering with Chesterfield County Public Schools and Communities in Schools to address the needs of nearly 800 unsheltered families.
There are 796 students identified and enrolled into our McKinney-Vento Program during the 2024-2025 school year. The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act ensures the educational rights and protections of children and youth experiencing homelessness. Children and youth who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence qualify as homeless. This includes those who:
– Share housing due to loss of housing or economic hardship (doubled-up),
– Live in motels, hotels, shelters, or transitional housing,
– Reside in cars, parks, public spaces, substandard housing, or other non-permanent accommodations.
Unaccompanied homeless youth (not in the physical custody of a parent or guardian) have the same rights under McKinney-Vento
The primary need is for personal hygiene products such as soap, shampoo/conditioner, deodorant/antiperspirant, lotion, toothbrush/paste, hair care supplies and laundry detergent. Dirty clothes and lack of hygiene items hinder students’ learning and confidence, exacerbated by bullying. Teachers are actively helping by washing clothes and providing hygiene products.
