Art and recovery

In the Fall of 2019, Into The Neighborhood and Make! Creative Studio partnered together to pilot Art and Recovery with our neighbors in True Recovery. We combine art, recovery, women, love, support, dinner and so much more into these evenings together. And… beautiful relationships begin in the studio and continue outside of the studio.

History – Our volunteers had met a number of ladies who came out of Richmond City Justice Center and moved into True Recovery RVA to continue their journey in recovery from substance use disorders. We were looking for ways to get to know them better and provide experiences that would support them in their journeys, while also sharing life and love. Make! provided the perfect avenue to do just that!

It wasn’t long before Covid 19 struck, and we quickly adapted our approach and took art directly to the houses and met outside to do our best to continue our community building and provide safe spaces to create art. We expanded to Eco Flats, The WAR Foundation, Lotus Recovery, Starfish, McShin, andAtlantic Outreach Group – Fresh Start.

We now meet back in the studio from 6-8p on Monday evenings and added some day classes over a year ago. Men and women are now enjoying the experience every week. The schedule for the upcoming season follows. If you would like to volunteer one of these classes or at any of our other gatherings, please reach out to Marti and she will get you plugged in!

Studio is located inside St. Giles Church, 5200 Grove Ave, RVA 23226. Enter the parking lot off Greenway Avenue and follow the signs!
